Common Mistakes to Avoid
Wrong payment date on receipts
The "Paid On" date must be the actual date you paid rent each month. Do not use the same date for all months — tax officers may flag this as fake receipts.
No landlord signature
A rent receipt without the landlord's signature is not valid for HRA claims. Print the receipts and get them signed by your landlord each month (or at least at year-end for the full year).
Not collecting landlord PAN (rent > ₹1L/yr)
If your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, your employer will reject the HRA claim without landlord PAN. This is mandatory under Income Tax rules. Get it before your investment declaration deadline.
Claiming HRA for a property you own
